If you enter a battle, remember to battle.
You can have the most original style, cleanest sets, unbelievable power moves, but if you’re not adding battle tactics to it, then you’re really only just showcasing. While being original/creative is always number one, you have to remind yourself you’re battling against someone. Simply facing your opponent druing your run is the most...

– Kid Cudi
What I take from this lyric is that sometimes we shouldn’t waste time thinking, instead, go with what we feel in that moment from either our moods or the music. It can be a set up to failure if you cant achieve what your imagination is telling you which can lead to discouragement. ...

misconception: starting point
FOUNDATION is not defined by ‘6step’ ‘cc’ ‘indian step’ etc. Foundation is whatever you want your base to be. I started breaking by learning power moves. thats my foundation because thats what i built everything i do today from. Majority of my favorite bboys started with a power background and went from there.
So if youre new to this dance, dont think you...
found some old footage on my external drive. this was from 2008? most of the content has been shared in previous posts. here is the transcript with my own made up terms for moves.

2. cc juggles (skipping the middle steps)
3. slide stand fake domino cancel to footwork juggle to baby

GO ALL OUT
One thing I ask myself and my crew is ‘Would you rather lose in the prelims, or the quarterfinals?’ of course the answer would be quarterfinals. and then I ask ‘Would you rather lose in the quarters or the semis?’ and so on.
dont hold back. stay sharp.
YOUTUBE IS THE DEVIL
ok..well not really. but it can either help you, or hurt you as a dancer, especially if youre still developing your own style. I mentioned in a previous post that what you hear can influence the viewer. Bebe from GZC once talked about this in an old interview.
When you turn off the volume, your focus is more on the dancer’s content. Yes, musicality is important,...

Entering competitions
If you’re usually near the bottom of the sign up list, you probably know what it’s like to have to sit and wait for your battle to start. Sometimes you could be waiting and anticipating over an hour. Your energy drains, and early competitors are setting the bar higher as the prelims roll. So its a good idea to sign up as early as possible. Another advantage is that the judges will...

Training Tip
I cant remember if I posted this before, but here’s a quick tip thats almost common sense.
The week before an event, I work completely on execution by repetitions. No time or energy wasted on new ideas because without execution, you lose no matter what the creative ideas you come up with.
Execution wins battles.!

SAME SHIT DIFFERENT DANCER
Over the last decade, the scene has flooded with cookie cut ‘b-boys’ Some bboys even changed their entire style to look more ‘b-boy’. And there are those that learn basic steps, yet put no effort progressing into individual style and movements. They wait for the next trend, or hop on youtube to see what the popular guys are doing.
If you...

Pablo’s Startup
My last post (Soul Control) featured original power styles that were ahead of its time. Watching Pablo do 2 airflares back then was unseen before. I wondered what gave him the momentum to go more than one airflare. I studied the startup and found it unique but simple. Reminds me of a capoeira step. It doesnt mean that its the only way to do multiple...

DEFAULTS!
When I was more active in the competition scene I would always review my footage and find my defaults.
Defaults are steps you do subconsciously while you’re thinking of what to do next. Another synonym would be the ‘filler’ moves. For example you do a windmill, and go into footwork, 6step (default) into a pre-thought move, then 6step (default), into your ending. You fill in 6step to connect...
THE TRENDY BANDWAGON
In fashion, trends are recycled and ever changing. Same thing applies in the Bboy scene. Observing videos, I notice what bandwagon the scene is jumping on. ‘The W freeze’, ‘the jump in the air freeze and fall to the ground move’ or is it ‘the windmill while tapping one foot’ that’s hot right now? Whatever it is, learn it as a ‘foundation’...
LIVE N LEARN
If you don’t admit you lost, then you will continue to lose.
REPETITIONS
Whether I win or lose, there’s a chance that I didn’t execute 100% on all my runs. That seems to be a common reason a dancer loses in a battle. So for training, I’ll review the footage and see what I messed up on. Go into training and repeat the run 10X. No errors, and if I mess up then start over. It’s like running laps - train harder and perfect everything. Same goes...

Went out with the cam and some equipment. Filmed my friend getting down. Here is just a small snip of what I got.

CANNONBALLS
Browsed through some old footage and came across some practice clips. Here is me attempting crunched-in windmills, I call them cannonballs. Its much more difficult than pogos/babymills, because the momentum comes from the arc in the back and the roll, instead of the bounce and leg kicks. Also I needed the higher bounce because it gives more time to roll under to avoid slamming...

ADDITION.
I recently posted the basics of evolving. In this example, I use something that wasnt on the list, its called addition/subtraction. Basically adding a step before or after, or taking something away from a move. For this move, your head rotates under your body and ends up on the other side.
Here is a clip of who I believe is the creator of the move, Bboy Remind.
And here is my addition to...

JAM ON IT!
I had a discussion with a friend about how a dance scene grows and what it needs to stay strong.
We touched upon different ways to get the dance scene to grow. One of them is to get those who are interested in the scene to actually and hopefully consistently attend dance events (shows, competitions, practices). Take a music artist for instance. Listening to them on the radio is a completely...
The Vice Versatile
Just because you are capable of doing something, doesn’t mean you should. And… just because someone else does something that inspires you, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t learn how it’s done.

Judges influence the community
I think judges play a small role in the community. Not taking anything away from the dancers, but judges decide who wins.
The new generation sees what wins. And i think for them, the natural thing to do is mimic what they see winning battles, because a goal for them is to be on top. So promoters- choose wisely, and new gen- do what feels good to you, and the rest will fall into place.
Humble Thyselves
This is key to staying progressive. If you lose as a crew, don’t complain and don’t get big headed. Review, critique, and discuss. Know why you lost/Know why you won. Remember, everyone (that works hard enough) gets a chance to shine. Talk to the judges, friends, enemies. Stay humble, keep the mind open.
DANCEBROOMZ v SHAPESHIFTERS. 2005.
Us battling one of our main dance inspirations, the Shape Shifters (branch of Circle of Fire), who later changed the name to SoulShifters. Im glad to see them still rockin strong in their 30s, a good motivation.
CROWDS INFLUENCE ON JUDGES
I was discussing with some friends last night with how the crowd/teammates can affect the judges outcome. I’ve judged plenty, and cant say this hasnt happened to me before, because it has. But I’ve practiced to slowly block out all extra noise by sitting near the speaker system. haha. Because when you judge, all you need to know is that they are dancing...
BBOYING TIP- THE TALK TEST
One problem I know bboys have trouble with is holding their breath while breaking. This causes you to drain energy faster which will then domino effect into more problems. I am still unsure what causes this. My guess is that all the focus is on what they are going to do, that they forget to breathe!
While I was watching the documentary “Spirit of the...

WIN-WIN
Winning a competition is like putting a trophy on the wall, but it isn’t necessarily making you a legend in the game. Take the NBA for example. There are plenty of great hall of famers that never won a ring but still left a name. Whether it be just a hometown hero, local legend, worldwide inspiration, use your talent to shine in other ways. get creative yall!! happy Sunday.

JUDGING: brackets
One thing that bothers me about judges is that they setup the battle brackets based on previous performance. In a typical Bboy competition, an elimination bracket is used, in other words, if you lose then you’re out. Anyway I believe at the start of a battle, all crews should be treated equally no matter what skill level or history. By placing the best crews on opposite ends of the...
